Melvin H. Sobel, 81, Chicago retailer and owner of The Blossom Shop and Mr. Marty’s, passed away peacefully on August 2nd in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he has resided for the past 16 years. He was surrounded by his loved ones. Melvin was the beloved husband of Judith R. (nee Ziedman); loving father of Karen (Rabbi Terry Bookman), James (Andrea), and Dana (Dr. William Kahn); proud “Tall Grandpa” of Ariel (Lena Sands), Jonah, Micah and Ezra Jesse Bookman, Alana, Mollie and Tovia Sobel and Noam, Eliana and Zachary Kahn; devoted son of the late Alexander and Rhea Sobel and adored son-in-law of the late A. Abraham and Rose Ziedman; dear brother of the late Blossom Fogel. Big Mel was larger than life, touching so many with his endearing charm, positive attitude and gentle spirit. His life was filled with a love of family, a passion for history and the natural world, and an unyielding perseverance to face his many health challenges. Chapel service Tuesday 12:15 PM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Interment Shalom Memorial Park.
